Our story begins with Mr. Yang Bing-Yi

DTF in Vancouver marks the first Canadian location from the same team behind the globally celebrated Din Tai Fung Restaurant Group, welcoming a fresh chapter in a culinary legacy that began over six decades ago.

Our story starts in 1958, when Bing-Yi Yang and his wife, Pen-Mei Lai, opened a small cooking oil shop in Taipei, Taiwan called Din Tai Fung. In 1972, they transformed part of the shop into a kitchen dedicated to making Xiao Long Bao—delicate, handcrafted soup dumplings. The dumplings quickly grew so popular that Mr. Yang phased out the oil business entirely, converting the space into a full-fledged restaurant. That turning point marked the beginning of the Din Tai Fung Restaurant Group, which operates more than 165 locations worldwide in over 14 countries.

Today, the Din Tai Fung Restaurant Group is celebrated for its signature 18-fold handcrafted Xiao Long Bao, warm service, and meticulous attention to quality and consistency across their restaurants.

Now, for the first time, that legacy arrives in Canada—under a new name. Brought to life by the Yang Family, DTF in Vancouver shares an identity that honors its rich heritage and the evolving story of the brand. Located on Alberni Street, DTF is independently owned and offers the same beloved menu and guest experience that have made the brand a household name—while proudly carving out its own distinct identity in Canada.
